12/28/2010 - Cupcake Monster - Day 5

I made this Monster because of my love of cupcakes. I had trouble getting the "frosting" edge to look right, but I think it turned out well :)

Leave suggestions in the comments below for a Monster I should make next! :D Thanks for reading!

P.S. Sorry about the delayed posts, I keep forgetting to update this thing. Literally, I get on the computer and tell myself, "Okay, I HAVE to get these new Monsters on the blog as soon as possible- Ooh, look! Tobuscus has a new YouTube video up!" I'm easily distracted (especially when Tobuscus is involved.)

12/27/2010 - Clouds at Dusk Monster - Day 4

I wanted to experiment with some multi-colored yarn I had, and this was the result. To me, it looked like clouds during a sunset, hence the name "Clouds at Dusk".

Have an idea for a Monster I should make? Leave it in the comments below! Thanks for reading :)

12/26/2010 - Pineapple Monster - Day 3

Day three! This day's monster, as you probably figured out from the title, is a Pineapple Monster.

This was inspired by my love for the TV show "Psych". For those of you who don't watch the show, in the pilot episode, the main characters Shawn and Gus were talking in Gus' kitchen. When Shawn tells Gus they're going on a "road trip" of sorts, Gus pauses and starts to walk away. As he does this, Shawn yells after him, trying to encourage him that it'll be fun. Then Shawn grabs a piece of fruit off of Gus' fridge - a pineapple - and asks, "Should I slice this up for the road?" Ever since then, there has been a hidden pineapple in almost every episode of the show. It could be in a bowl of fruit, on someone's t-shirt, or even made out of horseshoes hanging up on a wall , like in the Wild West episode in season 4. That is why I chose to do a Pineapple Monster.

Also, I just love pineapples. :)

If you have more suggestions for a Monster I should make during this year, please leave them in the comments. Thanks for reading! :3

12/25/2010 - Kitty Monster - Day 2

Day two of Year Of The Monster. In the book "365: A Creativity Journal", there are various suggestions for what your project could be based on for that day. For Day 2, it suggests you do something involving your favorite animal. Therefore, I made a Kitty Monster.

I would like to point out that cats are not my favorite animal because my name is Kat. I like them because they're cute and furry and cuddly and occasionally scratch my face off.

...Maybe that last reason doesn't quite apply.

Anyway, I don't like the mouth on this Monster. It ended up a bit messed up because I was trying to stitch the mouth while watching the movie "Inception", and I was fairly distracted by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and his hotness. Oh, and the fact that they were in a dream in a dream in a dream. (Believe it or not, I wasn't that confused by the movie. I understood most of it. The only part that bugged me was the spinning top totem. Why is it that in a dream the top would never fall? Is there always no physics in dreams when it comes to spinning tops? Stupid writers...) What was I talking about?

If you have suggestions for what I should make next, feel free to leave them in the comments, and thanks for reading! :D

12/24/2010 - Christmas Monster - Day 1

As you may have noticed, this is being posted on the 27th of December, even though this Monster is from the 24th. I'm lazy. (Plus, it's the holidays. I had to take a break from the computer.)

So, welcome to the first day of Monster making! Christmas Eve was the day I received the "365" book, so as you can tell, I didn't put much thought into this year-long project and started right away with my first Monster. Since I started making this Monster at night, this technically got finished Christmas morning. Nevertheless, I'm counting this as the Monster for the 24th.

Being Christmas Eve when I started this Monster, I decided it would be fitting to give it a little Santa hat. Other than that, it's a pretty simple, run-of-the-mill monster. Now you guys know what a Monster typically looks like (minus the Santa hat, of course.)

If you have suggestions for a Monster that you'd like to see me make, please leave them in the comments! Thanks! :)

I believe introductions are in order

Preface: I warn you, this is quite a bit of writing. I wanted to explain a bunch of things that are probably useless to you, but seem important to me. Forgive me.

Hi there! You've probably just stumbled along this blog, thinking, "'Year Of The Monster'? What the Hellmann's Mayonnaise is THAT?"Excluding the fact that for some reason you use the same food-related catch phrases as me, that's how most people would probably react to this strange blog. Well, that's why I'm making this post, to explain what the Hellmann's Mayonnaise this blog is.

First off, let's start with who I am. My name is Kat (or ktbunke). I'm a female from the United States (let's leave it at that) who enjoys various things, such as:
- Drawing, both realistic and cartoon-y

- Eating

- Watching/Making YouTube videos

- The TV show "Psych"

- Pineapples

- Rainbows

- Cute animals
- Miniatures

- Cooking (I know, I'm such a typical woman.)

- Being Head Detective for the Grammar and Spelling Police

- Singing (I'm TERRIFIED of singing in front of other people, though. I get super shaky and I don't sound good :/ )
- Using emoticons, even in real life ;D

- Making stuff (knitting, crocheting, sewing, gluing pieces of pasta to paper)

- Not being able to form sentences well (Sorry about that... )

- Watching movies

- Trying to speak Spanish with my Peruvian friend (and failing miserably)

- Spending my life on the internet

Now, on to what this blog is. Recently, as a Christmas present, I acquired a book called "365: A Creativity Journal". The basic premise of this book is to make something every day for a year using the same medium or subject. I was inspired by this, and since I have a love for crocheting (as mentioned before in the huge list above) I decided to start a year-long project in which I crochet a little monster-thing every day for 365 days.

They would all be different, ranging from a Rainbow Monster to a David Tennant Monster, all with the same basic shape and sharp, pointy teeth. This idea of a tiny monster actually comes from artwork I've made. In almost all of my drawings and doodles, there's a little monster in the corner with its mouth open, looking like it's about to eat everything else on the page. That's pretty much why I chose to use monsters as my subject (also, it's SUPER easy to make these Monsters, which works well with my usually busy school schedule.)

So there you have it! I have just (or well, more like 3 days ago) embarked on a quest to make a crocheted Monster every day for a year, hence the name "Year Of The Monster". Every day I will post a picture and a brief explanation of the Monster I have created that day. Please feel free to subscribe or whatever to this blog to see my progress! :)
